What a solar installer actually does, and when it is worth calling one
A solar installer designs and fits a photovoltaic system to your roof, then connects it to the house's electrical system and, in most cases, to the utility grid, so a system without batteries still keeps the house powered normally whenever the sun is not shining. Panels turn a roof into a small power plant, but whether building that plant makes sense depends entirely on the specific roof in question, its orientation, its shade, its remaining useful life, not on a general trend toward solar in your area.
The proposal you receive should include a real, site specific production estimate based on your roof's actual orientation, tilt and shading through the seasons, not a regional average with your address swapped into a template. If a quote arrives without that level of specificity, that alone is a reason to ask more questions.
Call when you plan to stay long enough for the investment to make sense, when your roof has real, unobstructed sun exposure for a meaningful part of the day, and when the roof itself is in good enough condition that it will not need major work again soon after panels go on. It is worth waiting, rather than calling, if the roof is nearing the end of its own life.
Solar work depends on the electrician's underlying assessment more than most people expect going in; the panel and the service connection have to support what the system is adding, and an installer who never involves, or at least consults, an electrician on that question is skipping a step that matters. Batteries are worth understanding as a separate decision layered on top of the panels themselves: a grid tied system with no battery still loses power when the grid goes down, while adding storage changes both the cost and the resilience of the system, and is closer in spirit to the generator decision elsewhere in this guide than to the panels themselves.

Ask directly how the system is being sized: to match your actual, historical electricity usage, or to the physical maximum the roof can hold. A company that has been in the area for a while and stands behind older work is a different bet than one offering the lowest price with no local history to check. It is also worth asking directly what happens to warranty coverage if the installer goes out of business, since panel manufacturers and installation companies often carry separate warranties, and only one of those two is guaranteed to outlast the other. Comparing at least two independent proposals, not two offers from the same referral source, is the simplest way to see whether a given sizing and price is reasonable.
What actually drives the payback
Roof orientation and shade decide more about the outcome than the specific equipment installed. Identical panels on a shaded, north facing roof and a clear, south facing one on the same street will produce meaningfully different results, exactly why a generic, regional payback estimate is close to useless for any individual house.
How long you actually plan to stay in the house matters just as much, since payback is measured over years, and a shorter expected stay changes the straight answer for the exact same roof and equipment. Financing method is the final major lever: paying upfront, taking a loan, and leasing the system from a third party are three different bets with three different break even timelines and three different answers to what happens if you sell early, worth running the comparison across all three before committing to any one of them.
Local utility policy is a real, if less visible, factor in the payback calculation, since how, and how well, a utility compensates a home for the power its system sends back to the grid varies and can change over time, and a payback estimate that assumes today's policy holds unchanged for decades is optimistic by design. Maintenance is a smaller but real ongoing factor too; panels themselves need little upkeep, but the inverter that converts their output into usable power typically has a shorter lifespan than the panels and may need replacement partway through the system's life, a cost worth asking about upfront rather than discovering later. Net metering rules, how a utility credits power sent back to the grid against power drawn from it, vary by state and by utility, and are worth understanding specifically for your address rather than assuming a neighboring state's rules apply. A system sized around today's rules can look different once those rules are revisited a few years into ownership, which is one more reason to treat any payback estimate as a considered range rather than a fixed promise.
