Moving & relocation: the day it all becomes real
The deal is done; now the couch has to get there. Moving is where a well-run purchase can still go sideways. Here's how to plan it, who to hire, and what everyone forgets until it's too late.
01Plan the move (start earlier than you think)
Good moves are boring because they were planned. Roughly eight weeks out, set a budget and decide DIY versus full-service. Then purge before you pack, the cheapest box to move is the one you don't. Sell, donate, or call junk removal or an estate-sale service for what's left. A dated inventory of anything valuable saves arguments later.
02Hire movers without getting burned
A local move and a long-distance (interstate) move are different animals, interstate movers are federally licensed, and you can look up a mover's record before you book. Get in-home or video estimates in writing, and understand binding vs non-binding quotes and the difference between basic liability and full-value protection.
- Red flags: no in-home estimate, a large cash deposit up front, a company name that keeps changing, or a "broker" that isn't the carrier actually moving you.
- Add-ons: professional packing, storage or PODs if your dates don't line up, and auto transport for a second car.
03Set up the new place
Handle the invisible move, not just the boxes. Transfer or start utilities, power, gas, water, internet, to be on before you arrive, and work a change-of-address checklist: the postal service, banks and cards, your employer, the DMV and voter registration, insurance, subscriptions and deliveries. Book a move-out clean for the old place, it's often tied to your deposit or sale.
04Long-distance and special moves
Some moves need extra planning: a cross-country haul on a fixed delivery window, pets and plants (rules and stress both rise with distance), a senior or downsizing move that's as emotional as it is logistical, or a corporate relocation package, coordinate with your employer's benefit and, if you're buying at the same time, a relocation specialist who can run it sight-unseen.
